Lovers Rock

Music promotes inner peace and mobility of soul. The way I convey myself and break down concepts for easier comprehension is through music. Music’s most valuable quality is its diversity. One musical composition can mean ten different things to ten different listeners.

The San Diego-based duo “TV Girl” formed their band in 2010 after meeting at a skate ramp and realizing they shared a love of music. The two inventive individuals blended their strengths in smooth voices and intricate percussion beats, captivating the audience with each of their creations. One of my favorite tracks from their 2014 album, “French Exit,” is “Lovers Rock.” The impassioned violin string chord progression of this tune absolutely hooks the listener from the very first bar. The song picks up with calming vocals after the introductory line, which is built on a straightforward yet lively rhythm backdrop.

Love can burn like a cigarette, and the following line in the lyrics for Lovers Rock is “and leave you with nothing,”. I relate so much in this line, because me and girlfriend broked up and it hurted me so much. It was so heavy for me to move on about it. Months after we broke up, one day I heard someone asking her who is her current boyfriend, then the person asked if it was Me she replied “EW NEVER” it teared my heart again. To the point where I started questioning myself, Because she managed saying that to me after I loved her with pure intentions. But with the help of this song I managed to move on without hating her for what she have done.

I was interested to explore how TV Girl’s distinctive sound, which heavily relies on samples, would translate live with a vocals/bass/drums/keyboard configuration. The soundboard in the front of the stage, which started their samples, was the solution. The Who Really Cares album’s Dream Girl figurine, as well as lighting that cycled through various colored tones and projected onto the audience as frequently as the band, were part of the stage setup.
